In April 2010, Cartoon Network was looking to present their plans for the coming season to press and potential advertisers with a new and exciting touch.
Before the show went live, d3 was used to test content matching to a checker-board-inspired set design created by Willie Williams (U2). By rendering out movies from the three-dimensional simulation in d3, the people in charge at Cartoon Network could easily approve design ideas and comment potential issues with the design, even though they were on the other side of the globe.
An important aspect of this project was not only to see how the content would appear on the center projection screen in advance of the show, but also to see how it interacted with the surrounding set. In addition to simulating screen content, d3 was also used to visualise textured scenography and moving objects, all in real-time, before being used as the show playback device.
Since the loading in was on Monday and the show on Wednesday 10 am, d3 played a crucial role as a pre-simulator and as a playback device during showtime, saving huge amounts of time and money from concept to delivery.
