d3 controls BARCO demo room10th November 2009

At Barco headquarters in Kuurne a new demo suite has been set up to showcase the latest digital lighting products by Barco and High End Systems. d3 was used as both the video and audio master playback server, whilst also generating the timecode from which the show was controlled.

Perfectly compatible with all equipment presented including Barco 6mm, FLX 24, FLX 60, DLM 1200 and HighEnd Systems' DL3, Showgun, Showpix, AXON media server, and theWhole Hog Full Boar lighting control desk. Queues via MIDI Show Control (MSC) from the full boar triggered d3 though it's scenes with the main scene providing midi timecode back to the Full Boar, along with audio and video content to the displays. The system is a permanent install.

Robbie Williams - X Factor15th October 2009

Using the three-dimensional manufacturing drawings of the X Factor set design, d3 was used to create and visualize the Robbie Williams visuals in real-time, with perfect sync to the beat of the music. With d3's advanced projection system, content could be “virtually projected” onto the complex three-dimensional design, made out of a number of different types of LED screens.

By using d3 the design team could not only visualize the content for their own purpose but also show the client in real-time exactly what it would look like, weeks before the production rehearsals. Mistakes was thereby be avoided and immediate changes were made in front of the client.

d3 was later used to output movies according to the show’s output template which was specified by the technical management. These movies were then played by a conventional media server.

Mujeres Asesinas 214th October 2009

Presented at Mexico City’s Televisa studios before the cream of Mexico City’s celebrity culture, Mujeres Asesinas 2 used an unconventional sculptural arrangement of MiStrip, Versatube and Martin LC LED to show trailers for the upcoming series, showcase individual actors, and act as a backdrop for some stunning all-singing, all-dancing musical numbers.

This was d3’s first project with our new South American partners Darmah MediaGroup, who have now set up a d3 visualisation studio in Mexico City.

Jay-Z Blueprint 3 Tour16th September 2009

UVA's d3 system was used throughout the design process for Jay-Z's 2009 world tour, including his spectacular 9/11 charity show at Madison Square Gardens. From the very first stages, it was used to evaluate alternative stage layouts, allowing the designers to experiment with a variety of different setups, resulting in Jay-Z's unique 'City of LED'.

Once the stage designs had been finalized, d3 proved vital as a content design tool, allowing the artists to create complex mappings across the unusual canvas, and giving them the freedom and flexibility to make changes right up to the actual night of the first show.

Fela! on Broadway15th September 2009

Video designer Peter Nigrini’s ambitious stage design for Fela! called for 14 separate projectors, with content extending across the stage and up into the audience. d3 was selected to drive the show when it transferred to Broadway. A six-system master/slave network drove all 14 projectors, including physical dimmer control via DMX.

A single understudy machine controlling a DVI matrix provided instant protection against hardware failures. d3 was also used to control four Sony VISCA cameras, compositing live video with pre-generated content. d3’s new video thumbnail management features allowed new content to be added in thumbnail (low-resolution) form, allowing the video content creators to quickly try out new ideas during rehearsal. Finally, d3’s new cast rotation feature (specially created for theatre productions) allowed video content and camera positions to be easily swapped out as cast members changed from show to show. The show is triggered from the lighting desk via Midi Show Control, with no video operator required during the run.

Take That15th July 2009

d3 was used as a video content pre visualisation tool in the rehearsal stages of Take That’s Circus Tour. Test video clips were loaded into the system and visualised in real-time 3D at UVA’s d3 visualisation suite in London, allowing fast evaluation of colour, speed and aesthetic content before full rendering. This allowed for the content creators and producers to prove their content worked before going to the venue.

Dream Girls18th February 2009

In partnership with Lightswitch (NYC) and XL Video, d3 was used as the sole content compositing and playback technology for the successful revival of the original Dreamgirls stage show on Broadway. The ground-breaking set used six vertical LED panels mounted on tracks, allowing them to move and rotate to create a complex and ever-shifting backdrop to the performers. d3 was used from the earliest stages of planning, allowing every scene to be visualised in real time, long before rehearsals began.
